Biography

Brendan Riley is an American film director, screenwriter, and visual stylist whose work investigates the collision between individual agency and the larger systems that shape human behavior. His films are defined by precise visual composition, extensive pre-planning, and psychologically exacting narratives that examine how ambition, composure, and self-certainty unravel under institutional, social, and internal pressures.

Born in Chesapeake and raised in Richmond, Brendan developed an early interest in visual and performative arts through photography, acting, and music. These formative experiences—combined with an early encounter with rigid educational systems—established his enduring preoccupation with how structures influence personal identity and behavior. He later studied psychology, an influence that continues to guide his character-driven approach to filmmaking.

Largely self-taught in film craft, Brendan learned through rigorous personal study, hands-on experimentation, and mentorship from artists across acting, cinematography, directing, and sound. This mentorship, especially during a period of personal loss, played a significant role in sharpening his focus and transitioning him into full-time filmmaking.

His films—including The Choice, Kissing Frogs, BLACKOUT, Sleight of Hand, and A Scream A La Red—have screened at the Richmond International Film Festival, Indie Short Film Festival, and the Ocean City Film Festival. Across these works, Brendan has developed a haptic-oriented visual style, favoring texture, structure, and material presence over traditional aesthetic polish.

Brendan is the founder of Riley Films LLC, an Artistic Associate of HATTheatre, and a former RIFF Arts Institute Film & Writing Fellow. He continues to build a rigorous, system-focused body of work with recurring collaborators and is currently developing Still, a companion short to BLACKOUT.
